Rain – a poem by Urmila Mahajan

I remember when
rain unlocked earth
to long promises,
clingy mud-spattered
songs
sprouting
renewed
transformation,
mildewed slippers,
all manner
of growth.

Hissing curtains
of rain displace
fickle winds
that hiccup on
seamless concrete
(loud as the song
in my ear).
I draw them
aside, stooping
to retrieve the
fragments.
